Representatives of the Slovenian government and the French vehicle manufacturer Renault signed a memorandum of understanding today in Novi Mesto, based on which the new electric Twingo will be produced at the Revoz factory.
Production will begin in 2026, and initially 150,000 vehicles will be produced each year. The amount of the investment has not been announced.
The memorandum of understanding was signed at a ceremony at the factory in Novi Mesto (where Renault cars have been produced since 1973) by Prime Minister Robert Golob, Vice President for the Industrial Area of the Renault brand Herbert Steiner and Director of Revoz Jože Bela.
Until recently, the Renault models Clio, Twingo and electric Twingo were assembled in Revoz, but this year they finished production of the old Twingo and the electric Twingo, so that currently only the Clio 5 model is assembled in one shift. The new contract will enable the maintenance of car production in Novo mesto , where 1400 people are currently employed.
According to the memorandum, Renault can count on the support of the state when investing in starting the production of a new model. The government recognized the investment as strategic and expressed its strong will to support the production of electric cars in Revoz.
Negotiations began a year and a half ago, when the future of Revoz was very uncertain, Golob said, recalling that the Novo Mesto factory was then faced with a reduction in the number of shifts and a reduction in the number of employees.
“Electric cars are the future,” said Economy Minister Matjaž Han, adding that the signing of the memorandum not only guarantees technological progress, but also our commitment to sustainable development. With the new line of electric cars, we are not only strengthening our economic strength, but also our role on the European and world markets, Han said.
At the end of last year, Renault presented the concept of the new Twingo electric model (pictured). We are talking about the Twingo E-tech electric model, which, according to Steiner, is the answer to decarbonization, the issue of air quality, affordable electric mobility and last but not least, the re-industrialization of Europe.
According to Belet, the new model of the electric Twingo directly meets the needs of the European car market. The small urban city car will reportedly be available to buyers for 20,000 euros.
