The Embassy of Hungary in Damascus has reopened

Péter Szijjártó drew attention to the fact that in recent weeks, most of the world’s attention was focused on the events in Syria.

By now, armed clashes have subsided and local security conditions have stabilized, so we have decided to reopen the Hungarian Embassy in Damascus

– emphasized the head of the ministry, adding that the restoration of our personal presence on the ground provides an opportunity to receive first-hand authentic information about the processes taking place in the country, as well as to be able to represent our political position and, if necessary, to act in the interests of Hungarian citizens. Hungary is interested in the peace and stability of the Middle Eastern region, and we also pay special attention to the Christian communities living in the region, for whom we continue to provide humanitarian assistance.

We always raise our voices firmly to respect the rights of Christian communities, and this is also the case in Syria

Péter Szijjártó emphasized.

Along these lines, our ambassador returning to Damascus was the first and so far the only Western diplomat to visit the leaders of the two largest Christian denominations, who provided information on how the Christian communities experienced the events of the past weeks

he wrote.

The church leaders expressed their thanks for Hungary’s firm stance on the side of the Syrian Christians and for the solidarity, which is unfortunately increasingly rare on the part of European countries in such uncertain times.

– said Péter Szijjártó.
