This is the end of a great era. Laptops and desktops are getting ready for a possibly simpler time with artificial intelligence, and manufacturers want to have a simpler offering for (some) customers. But the Alienware gaming brand will remain. Dell does not dare to change it, or rather it has been out of the picture for a long time and acts as a separate brand that not everyone associates with Dell.
In short, Dell is changing its strategy. Its long-standing brands of notebooks and desktops are ending and will be replaced by perhaps too simplistic names. Everything will be either Dell, Dell Pro, or Dell Pro Max. These designations should also have an extended name (subcategory), which means adding the words Plus or Premium. Presumably all PCs will also be Copilot+ PCs.
“The computer is the most important personal productivity device in our lives, and artificial intelligence is reshaping it,” he said Michael DellCEO of Dell Technologies. “Dell has been the driving force behind PC innovation for the past 40 years, and we’re in a good position right now. Our new, more efficient AI computing portfolio is here to deliver the future of computing.”
- Dell: Designed for gaming, school and work
- Dell Pro: Designed for professional-level productivity
- Dell Pro Max: Designed for maximum performance
The XPS, Inspiron and Inspiron Plus models will simply be Dells. Only their longer variant (subcategory) will determine whether it is Plus or Premium. The business Latitude will be Dell Pro, but depending on the specific model, it will also be Pro Plus or Pro Premium. This should correspond to the current 3000, 5000 and 7000 series. And it is similar with the Precisions.
The change can be better visualized if we convert it to a table.
current name | new name | new name including subcategory |
Inspiron | Dell | Dell (Basic) |
Inspiron Plus | Dell | Dell Plus |
XPS | Dell | Dell Premium |
Latitude | Dell Pro | Dell Pro, Pro Plus, Pro Premium |
Precision | Dell Pro Max | Dell Pro Max, Dell Pro Max Plus, Dell Pro Max Premium |
HP also showed a similar, although not so drastic, change
The new generations will also receive new processors from Intel, AMD and Qualcomm. Dell was not one of the brands that had complicated laptop names, and some of the names are downright a shame. A similar simplification happened last year at HP, which killed the Pavilions, Envy and Specter and, on the contrary, revived the OmniBook brand.
The first products with new names in the offer will be business laptops Dell Pro 13, Dell Pro 14 Premium, Dell Pro 14 Plus and Dell Pro 16 Plus. Dell Plus user laptops are to follow in March.
