The end of the rally season celebration in Utena turned into a tragedy: one person was killed and a dozen were injured when a car drove into a crowd of spectators.

The incident took place on the city expressway. The accident was caused by the Latvian crew of number 75 – Kristaps Telle and Kasparas Grīva, who were driving a Ford Focus sports car. The crew lost control of the car at the turn on Rašytojų street and crashed into the spectators.

One video that reached the newsroom shows a car going around a corner at high speed and something happening in the distance. Spectators watching the rally grab their heads and cover their mouths.

He was at the scene 15min journalist Tomas Markelevičius recorded a car that had an accident, which was overturned on its roof near the track. At the turn, the car did not turn left, but went straight to where the spectators were standing. A body bag was also seen next to the overturned car, in which the bodies of the dead were placed.

Due to this incident, the competition was stopped. The organizers of the event have not yet detailed how many people were injured and how serious the injuries were.

“There was an accident during the city speedway. The circumstances of the incident are being clarified. When the information becomes clear, a press release will be issued”, said the organizers of “Samsonas Rally Utena”.

There are many medical and police cars near the Utena hospital on Friday evening. After the accident, doctors rushed to save the victims not only from Utena, but also from the surrounding towns – Molėtai, Zarasai, Ukmergė.

“At 9:47 p.m., in the fourth speed section, the crew ran off the track for unforeseeable reasons and injured 9 people. We are sorry to report that one person suffered fatal injuries at the scene. All other persons are provided with the necessary medical assistance.

According to the decision of the College of Sports Commissioners, the rally competition is suspended. The Lithuanian Motor Sports Federation is continuing the investigation of this incident. We will inform the public as new facts become available.

The entire rally community, the rally organizers express their deepest condolences to the victims and their relatives during this tragic event. We wish the victims a speedy recovery and mourn with the relatives of the deceased,” announced the organizers of the “Samsonas Rally Utena” competition.

The Communications Department of the Utena County Police Department said on Friday evening that at least one person was killed and 12 injured in the incident.

15min according to news, the initial report received by the police was that a car drove into a crowd in Utena, about 20 people were injured and may be crushed.

A representative of the Situation Coordination Department of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department (PAGD). 15min stated that there was no need for firemen and rescuers to lead the trapped victims – medics and police officers were working on the spot.

After this incident, the rally competition was stopped and will not continue on Saturday.
