The entire new movie “28 Years Later” was shot entirely on an iPhone

With a total budget reaching 75 million dollars, the film “28 Year Late “ by Danny Boyle will become the first major blockbuster film to shot exclusively with an iPhone!

The new horror film was shot over the summer using the iPhone 15 Pro Max as the main camera, along with additional equipment such as lens attachments and more. The filmmakers behind 28 Years Later apparently received technical assistance directly from Apple. 28 Years Later is the sequel to “28 Days Later” (2002) and “28 Weeks Later” (2007), which depict the aftermath of a zombie-like pandemic in the United Kingdom.

Largely during the filming of the project “28 Days Later” we had a standard 480p with a Canon XL-1 – a consumer-grade camcorder that wrote data to MiniDV tapes. This was partly due to the need to film complex scenes depicting a derelict central London under very tight time constraints, where bulky traditional film cameras would have taken a long time to set up. Using an iPhone to shoot the latest addition to the series seems to pay homage to the use of camcorders from the original film. The original film’s Oscar-winning cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle also returns alongside Boyle.

Several smaller-scale films have already been shot on an iPhone, such as “Tangerine” (2015) by Sean Baker and “Unsane” by Steven Soderbergh (2018), but these films were of limited release and low budget compared to Boyle’s upcoming film. 28 Years Later is expected to be the first in a new film trilogy written by Alex Garland. The star of the original film, Cillian Murphy, is also expected to return. 28 Years Later is expected to be released on June 20, 2025.
