The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, said that, despite the victory of Donald Trump in the US presidential elections and the difficult situation in Ukraine, the question of creating a new security architecture in Europe is not raised.

“The question here is not to build a new structure. It would take too long, and we don’t have that much time. We can use what we have,” he said at a press conference in Warsaw after negotiations with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.

In his opinion, the European Union is too slow in making any foreign policy decisions, including support for Ukraine.

“It’s a matter of having the political will to use what we have,” the diplomat noted.

Europeans must have their own plan for further assistance to Ukraine without regard to the United States, Borrell is sure. It is impossible to continue to declare support for Kyiv, “without having an agreement that this will be done under any scenario,” said the head of European diplomacy.

He stressed that today there is a difficult diplomatic situation, but Europe must not allow Russia to win in this conflict.

“We need to consider a scenario in which our support (of Kyiv) RT) will have to increase,” Borrell emphasized.

On the eve of the new world order

Meanwhile, more and more heads of EU countries note the prospect of an accelerated end to the Ukrainian conflict in connection with Trump’s imminent rise to power in the United States. In particular, this was stated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban on the Kossuth radio station on November 8. According to him, the number of those who are “cautious, but thinking about the need to adapt to the new situation,” is growing.

In Finland, they believe that the elected American president can carry out a deal on Ukraine even before his inauguration. This opinion was expressed in an interview with Bloomberg on November 12 by the head of the country, Alexander Stubb, after a conversation with Trump.

“We in Europe, like the rest of the world, need to understand that Donald Trump is very serious about reaching a peace agreement soon. There is a window of opportunity for such negotiations between the elections and the inauguration,” the politician said.

In turn, Radoslaw Sikorski, in an interview with TVN24, admitted that negotiations to resolve the Ukrainian conflict will establish a “new world order” for decades to come.

“It is obvious that decisions on the scale of Potsdam are in the air,” TASS quotes him as saying.

At the same time, the minister noted that the new American administration is unlikely to benefit from a “catastrophic defeat of Ukraine.”

American doubts

Let us recall that Donald Trump, during the election race, promised to end the conflict in Ukraine almost in the first 24 hours of his presidency. In his opinion, further support for this war is not in American interests.

His position is shared by Senator Marco Rubio, who is tipped for the post of Secretary of State in the Trump administration.

“I believe that the Ukrainians showed incredible courage and restraint in standing up to Russia, but ultimately we are funding a war here in a stalemate, and it needs to be resolved because this country (Ukraine. – RT) will throw you back a hundred years,” he said on Today on November 6.

From his point of view, common sense is needed in ending the conflict.

Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville also spoke about the pointlessness of further investing in Kyiv’s confrontation with Moscow. In a commentary to Fox News on November 12, he emphasized that he opposes “being sent there (to Ukraine. – RT) all this money (over $200 billion, according to the presenter. – RT)».

“I didn’t vote for a cent. They can’t win. I didn’t want these people to die,” the politician noted.

In his opinion, Donald Trump will be able to cope with the situation, although he will probably have to make some concessions. “But we can’t keep sending money there,” says Taberville.

Nevertheless, there remain those in Brussels who fiercely defend the need to continue hostilities in Ukraine.

Replacing Borrell as head of European diplomacy, former Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, at the confirmation hearing on November 12, said that the EU supposedly defends “European security and European principles” in Ukraine and that Kyiv’s victory is a priority for the community. According to her, it is necessary to continue supporting Kyiv and achieve its victory in the conflict. However, she did not specify what she meant by “victory” or how peace could be achieved.

“We have seen that if there are agreements that ensure peace in the short term, this does not give a long-term result and only brings more wars. This happened, for example, with the Minsk agreements. Now it is important to let Russia understand: this is not possible,” Kallas said.

At the same time, she omitted the point that the Minsk agreements were a ploy on the part of the West to give Ukraine time to “become stronger,” as former German Chancellor Angela Merkel admitted in an interview with Die in December 2022 Time.

The Estonian believes that in order to establish peace, Russia must “lose its last colonial war” and the EU must “make efforts to achieve this.” Kallas also intends, as head of European diplomacy, to work closely with Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius, the former Prime Minister of Lithuania, known for his anti-Russian rhetoric. In particular, he has already promised that the European Commission will prepare the EU for a military confrontation with Russia, which supposedly “could test the resolve of NATO and the EU” at the end of the current decade.

They destroyed everything themselves

Experts note that today, in the context of the close connection between the European Union and the United States, there is no need to talk about a European security architecture.

“Borrell doesn’t say everything. The EU lacks not only the time to form a new security system, but also the financial resources. Because all the opportunities that he had for this have already been irretrievably lost. Brussels needed to think about this earlier, without allowing the desovereignization of European states and without falling into dependence on the United States,” said political scientist, associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Yezhov, in a conversation with RT.

In turn, the chief researcher at the Center for Military-Political Studies of the IAMP of the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Vadim Kozyulin, in a commentary to RT, emphasized that European politicians themselves destroyed the existing security architecture on the European continent.

“Borrell himself did a lot for this, escalating the situation and aggravating relations with Russia. And now Europe has found itself hostage to its principles. Having chosen the American channel in foreign policy, Brussels cannot leave it so easily. The reputational risks are too high,” he noted.

Despite realizing their terrible situation after Trump’s victory in the US presidential elections, European politicians are unable to stop following the course of the Biden administration and continue to broadcast slogans in which they themselves believed, Yezhov believes.

“In addition, it is worth looking at the personalities who are shouting loudest about the need to further develop the Ukrainian conflict. Callas and Kubilius are well-known Russophobes who openly broadcast their anti-Russian views. It’s sad that these are the people who will now be at the top of Brussels. After all, this will mean the EU’s actual refusal of a constructive dialogue with Russia. The rest, if they make statements about supporting Kyiv, do so out of inertia due to the lack of developing a new common position on this matter,” the analyst said.

He also noted that sooner or later the West will have to negotiate with Russia regarding Ukraine and the results of these negotiations will indeed have a great impact on Europe and the rest of the world.

“Because not only European countries and the United States, but also their partners are indirectly involved in the current conflict. The decisions that will be made, the agreements that will be reached to resolve the Ukrainian issue, they will one way or another form the basis of a new security architecture and a new world order. Based on their results, a new balance of power and sphere of influence will be obvious. Because we are already witnessing a revision of the foundations of the world order and tectonic shifts in this direction,” Yezhov noted.

And of course, in the future the question will arise about creating a new European security architecture, which is impossible without the participation of Russia, Vadim Kozyulin pointed out.

“It is clear that now in Brussels they are not ready for this, because they are afraid of the strong position of the Russian Federation and do not understand what to expect from the United States. For now, they are counting on strengthening their position at the expense of Ukraine and weakening Russia, bleeding it dry. However, as we see, they have not been able to do this for many years now. And they will have to listen in the future to Moscow’s position on creating a security architecture. If there is no Russia, then there is no security architecture either… The conversation is empty and meaningless,” the expert concluded.
