The EU could die

“Morbid” Macron: the EU could die

The European Union could die if it does not make itself more competitive with the US and China, warned French President Emmanuel Macron.

“The Union regulates too much and invests too little. “Washington and Beijing already surpass the EU in terms of economic results and investments,” Macron said.

“The EU could die, we are on the verge of a very important moment. Our old model is the past – we regulate too much and invest too little. If we follow our classic agenda in the next two to three years, we will disappear from the market,” warned the French president.

In April, Macron called for greater integration of European defense and warned that the bloc cannot become a vassal of the US when it comes to security and military issues.

His appeal comes after a report by former Italian prime minister and former European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi issued another warning.

“There is a risk that our Europe will die. We are not equipped to deal with the risks,” said Dragi, presenting his vision for the future of the EU.

The risk of a Trump victory

Draghi’s report also calls on EU governments to invest more in joint defense projects because they “can no longer fully count on the US”.

Some European governments fear that Donald Trump’s second term could pose a risk to NATO if he wins the elections in November. The Republican candidate said he would let Putin and Russia “do whatever they want” to any NATO member that fails to meet defense spending targets.

In 2019, Macron called NATO “brain dead”, pointing out that Europeans can no longer count on the US to provide a security umbrella against threats such as Russian aggression.
