The EU is helping Moldova with cyber security during the presidential elections. Experts from eight member states were sent to Chisinau

  • Experts in cyber security from eight EU states were sent to Chisinau to support Moldova during the presidential elections.
  • The team is led by Lithuania, and among the countries participating in the effort is Romania, it is announced in a press release of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense.

“The Multinational Cyber Rapid Response Team (CRRT) of the EU Member States completed its second mission in support of the Republic of Moldova (and the third from 2022) during the first round of the presidential elections and the referendum on anchoring EU membership in the constitution . The deployment follows a request for support from the Information Technology and Cyber Security Service of Moldova (STISC). This was the largest CRRT mission in Moldova so far, carried out with two different teams covering a distinct range of tasks,” the statement said.

CRRT experts from 8 participating member states (Belgium, the Netherlands, Croatia, Romania, Poland, Austria, Latvia and Lithuania) were sent to Chisinau.

“After getting familiar with the IT infrastructure, the teams, together with their Moldovan counterparts, performed vulnerability assessments (including hardware assessments and penetration tests) of various government services, monitored the cyber security situation during the electoral process. This support demonstrates the EU’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Moldova’s resilience, especially on its path to the European Union. It also reflects our collective effort within the Permanent Structured Defense Cooperation (PESCO) to build a safer and more resilient Europe, ensuring that no country is alone in the face of cyber threats,” the Lithuanian representatives of the ministry also announce.

The EU Cyber Rapid Response Teams remain committed to strengthening the cyber resilience of partners and are open to close cooperation in implementing preventive measures as well as helping to respond to potential cyber incidents.
