The European Commission fined the American Internet corporation Meta 798 million euros for violating competition rules in the online classifieds market.
Meta’s competitive advantages
On the Marketplace, users have the opportunity to resell used goods. Access to the service is provided through a Facebook profile. Thus, Meta provides its own platform with “advantages that cannot be compensated by other ad services,” explained EU Competition Commissioner Margarete Vestager.
In addition, Brussels expressed concern that Meta, which in addition to Facebook owns Instagram and a number of other services, has special access to data from competitors who advertise on various platforms.
The decision of the European Commission was made following an investigation that lasted from June 2021.
Meta is appealing the decision in court
Meta’s management said it would appeal the European Commission’s decision in court. According to the company, the EC’s decision “ignores the reality of Europe’s thriving online classifieds market.” Until a court decision is made, the company will follow the instructions of the European Commission, the statement states.
