The European Commission (EC) has launched two new infringement proceedings against the Hungarian authorities, he announced the union board on Thursday.
The European Court of Justice initiates such a case if some EU legislation is not or is being incorrectly applied in a member state, or if it is knowingly violated. The procedure starts with correspondence, which in the absence of an agreement can lead to a lawsuit and then a fine.
A Telex writes that among the November decisions, the board started one of the new procedures with a notice letter, calling on the Hungarian authorities to properly transpose the EU directive on waste. The Commission has already initiated infringement proceedings against 11 other member states (Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Italy, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal and Romania) in the case, and Hungary is joining them.
Among other things, the Commission has a problem with the national goals set for extended producer responsibility, and according to it, the authorities have not reported how they would promote home composting. The other procedure was initiated because of the directive on landfills, because according to the EC, the Hungarian authorities did not properly implement the regulation preventing the dumping of selectively collected waste.
The Court of Justice of the EU can decide on the Sovereignty Protection Act in an accelerated procedure.
