Today’s enlargement report is the basis for Georgia’s return to the European path, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell emphasized in Brussels. However, before the start of accession negotiations, the Georgian authorities must first adopt legislative amendments and investigate alleged electoral irregularities.

»In recent months, the Georgian authorities have distanced the country from the European Union, its values and principles. Our report provides a clear basis for re-committing paths to the European Union if the Georgian leadership shows the political will,” said the high foreign policy representative of the European Union at the presentation of the package of enlargement reports for the countries that want to join the union Joseph Borrell. According to him, official Tbilisi will show its commitment to the European path by abolishing the law on foreign influence, which tightens control over civil society, and the law on family values, which limits the rights of the LGBTIQ community.

Until Georgia stops the behavior that threatens its path to the European Union, the commission will not be able to consider recommending the start of accession negotiations with it, the report says.

Georgia received the status of a candidate country for EU membership in December last year, but the leaders of the member states concluded in June this year that the process of its accession to the EU is due to the above-mentioned laws. in fact stalled. Georgia’s further approach to the union is also called into question by the results of Saturday’s parliamentary elections, which were celebrated by the ruling Georgian Dream party, which favors closer relations with Russia.

»Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia, which were marked by serious irregularities. These should be investigated independently and transparently,” Borrell warned. Today, the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation into alleged election defects, to which M.D. warned international observers of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
