Ursula von der Leyen, who became the head of the European Commission for the second time in a row, in her speech before the vote in Strasbourg, emphasized the need for Europe to strengthen its economy to ensure its security.
She said freedoms are not taken for granted and difficult choices must be made: “This means that we have to invest a lot in our security, in our material well-being. Above all, this means that we must remain united and true to our values.”
Von der Leyen said the first major initiative of the new European Commission would be to create a competitiveness compass, which would be based on the three pillars proposed in the corresponding report of former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi: closing the innovation gap with the US and China, competitively reducing greenhouse gas emissions and ensuring security and strategic independence.
The President of the European Commission also called on European countries to increase defense spending and stated that European security will always be a priority of the European Commission.
The new composition of the European Commission will begin work on December 1.
