The most important question on Tuesday is who will be elected to head the European Parliament. Two candidates are on the list: Roberta Metsola from the EPP (the outgoing president who led the European Parliament for the past two and a half years) and Irene Montero from the left. The president is elected by secret ballot, the winning candidate must receive an absolute majority of the votes cast. A maximum of four votes can be cast. If the decision is reached, the election of the vice-presidents will follow.
As we previously reported, the Patriots for Europe faction became the third largest force in the European Parliament in a few weeks, surpassed only by the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) and the European People’s Party (EPP).
The stakes of the first plenary session starting today are huge, as it will be revealed on Thursday whether the European Parliament will vote Ursula von der Leyen for the position of President of the European Commission for the second time.
The politician has to convince slightly more than half of the 720 representatives of the European Parliament that he is suitable to fill the position again, but this high percentage is difficult to get even with the representative groups that support him (EPP, S&D and Renew). If Ursula von der Leyen loses the vote, the leaders of the member states must agree on a new candidate.
