The F-22 fighter jet's engine looks like a Star Wars ship

At first glance, the first generation of the F-119 engine from Pratt & Whitney brings to mind spaceships straight from Star Wars. Interestingly, the F-35 Lightning II fighters already have a new, improved design called the F-135. Meanwhile, the F-119 offers 156 kN of thrust and is designed for supersonic flight without using an afterburner. Its thrust is 22% greater and it is built with 40% fewer parts compared to the engines of the 4th generation of military aircraft.

According to Pratt & Whitney, the engine can accelerate the fighter to a speed of Mach 1.6 without using an afterburner. The drive has outlet nozzles that can be tilted up and down with a maximum angle of 20°. Their change takes place in less than 1 second, which makes the F-22 aircraft great at maneuvering.

The engine is about 500 centimeters long, 130 centimeters in diameter at its thickest point, and weighs about 2,270 kilograms. Most importantly, the F-119 has dual, redundant, fully authorized digital engine control, also called internally digital electronic engine control (DEEC). The system was designed and built by Hamilton Standard. This makes the engine highly reliable, stall-proof and forgiving of quick throttle inputs.

The F-22 Raptor fighter is soon to see its successor. Little is known about the 6th generation fighter, or NGAD, but leaks from American defense companies indicate that it will be a machine based on the YF-23 and will have capabilities unavailable to any other aircraft in the world.

The prototype has already been flown in 2020. Its capabilities surprised even its creators. Apparently, the construction of the first combat model has already started.. It is to be the successor to the air superiority fighter, the F-22 Raptor. It is a completely new approach to aircraft design. The fighter will not have a classic tail and is to have material technologies based on alloys and shape-shifting composites.
