The fear of failure and the thought of what others will think are two obstacles that sometimes trip me up

For Carina Savaco-founder of Raw Music and Conference Program Manager of the Mastering The Music Business conference, AI and technology in general are among the most creative fields in recent years, but they should be used sparingly. He often goes to conferences and workshops, not only in the music field, to broaden his perspective.

“Acquired experience has advantages, such as a better understanding of processes, more information, but it can also be a hindrance. Now, I know better what works and what doesn’t, but this knowledge can sometimes limit spontaneity and openness to ideas completely new”, says Carina.

For her, some problems are solved with a good sleep, and a walk in nature and conversations with friends help her to put her thoughts in creative order. He has not yet discovered the recipe for pure inspiration – sometimes ideas come from nothing, other times he has to look for them at the desk with pen in hand. He admires people who manage to combine originality with practicality, who are not afraid to experiment and take risks.

Personal definition of creativity

To me, creativity is the ability to look at something ordinary in a new way, discover unexpected connections, and turn these new insights into ideas or solutions that bring value.

How the perspective on creativity has changed over time

I used to think of creativity as a quality only for artists or those who work in the arts and advertising fields, in roles that explicitly require the generation of innovative ideas. It took me a while to realize that we are actually all creative and that any professional field can benefit from a creative approach. We understand that creativity is not limited to art and advertising, but manifests itself in the way we approach problems, find new solutions and improve processes in everything from science and technology to education and management.

What does creativity depend on?

I don’t think I’ve identified a clear pattern so far, although it would be helpful. Sometimes ideas and solutions appear when I least expect it, whether I’m doing physical activity, walking, or doing various household tasks. Other times, I need to sit down at my desk and actually work on problems, organize my information and data, and then come up with ideas on how to approach them. Probably, in reality, it is a mix between these approaches.

Habits, shortcuts, recipes

I don’t have exact recipes. Sometimes ideas appear spontaneously and unexpectedly, without a clear pattern. Other times, it is necessary to devote time and effort to analyze and organize information. I can say that the creative process is fluid and adapts according to context and mood. Sometimes it can be triggered by an interesting conversation, an inspiring read, or even a simple pause for reflection. Basically, it’s a mix of factors, and there’s no one-size-fits-all formula that I follow every time.

What came with the experience

When I was younger, I had more courage to experiment and explore new ideas without thinking too much about obstacles or what has been done before. Accumulated experience has advantages, such as a better understanding of processes, more information, but it can also be a hindrance. Now, I know better what works and what doesn’t, but this knowledge can sometimes limit spontaneity and openness to completely new ideas. It takes balance between using the accumulated wisdom and maintaining the openness and courage to try more unconventional things.

How do you train your creativity?

I think it helps a lot to be constantly exposed to information from various fields, not just my industry, and to be involved in diverse activities that enrich my perspective. I enjoy reading and listening to podcasts that cover different topics, which gives me new perspectives and inspiration. Also, activities like restful sleep and physical movement are important to me. Although I do not do these activities with the specific aim of training my creativity, I am aware that they contribute positively to stimulating it.

What are your sources of inspiration?

I think the sources of inspiration come from many aspects of my everyday life. I often find inspiration in my reading (from literature to non-fiction), in listening to podcasts on various topics (history, entrepreneurship, music business, politics, psychology, etc.), which give me new perspectives. Spending time in nature helps me relax my mind. Discussions with colleagues and friends give me different points of view, and personal experiences and travels also help stimulate creativity. But it depends a lot on the project. For example, for Mastering the Music Business – where I deal with the conference programming, the choice of discussion topics, speakers, etc. – it helps me to see which topics are of interest in the international industry, but always in the mix with the interests of the local industry, taking into account the needs of our audience, always trying to come up with something new compared to past editions.

Courses, workshops, events to inspire you

I constantly go to other music business conferences and to various courses and workshops, not only in the music field, but also in other fields. I attend development sessions to improve skills such as leadership and marketing. These experiences give me new knowledge and fresh perspectives that help me stay on top of trends and hone my skills in my work.

The obstacles to creativity

The fear of failure and the thought of what others will think are two obstacles that sometimes trip me up. Sometimes the oversaturation of information can be harmful, you need mental space to be creative, to process what you have accumulated and come up with new, creative solutions.

What happens when you have blackouts

It depends on the context. Sometimes, I ask for help from those around me and we discuss together to generate new ideas. Other times, I look at how others have approached similar problems, looking more for inspiration in their process than concrete solutions. But most of the time, if I’m feeling really stuck, a good night’s sleep can solve a lot of my creativity problems.

AI, Social Media and Creativity

In general, both AI and social media can be good sources of inspiration and useful tools in the creative process, but I think it’s important to use them with discernment to avoid certain pitfalls. AI can boost creativity by providing tools that automate repetitive tasks, analyze data and generate innovative suggestions. However, there is a risk that over-reliance on AI will limit originality.

Social Media can help by constantly exposing you to a wide variety of content and ideas, but at the same time, social media can lead to information overload and excessive comparison to others, which can negatively affect self-confidence and lead to roadblocks creative. Also, the pressure to create content that is popular and gets a lot of likes can negatively influence the originality of the creations.

The creative fields of recent years

I believe that technology and artificial intelligence are among the most innovative, with advances in machine learning enabling the development of customized solutions and applications. The video game industry has experienced an explosion of creativity, combining advanced graphics, captivating stories and innovative gameplay with new dimensions brought by virtual and augmented reality.

Do you have a role model?

I admire people who manage to combine originality with practicality, those who are not afraid to experiment and take risks. I am also influenced by those who, through hard work and perseverance, have managed to bring about significant changes in their field.
