The creator of the series “Birmingham gang” (Peaky Blinders), Steven Knight, confirmed that the upcoming film made for the streaming service Netflix “will not be the end” for this BBC crime drama.
Filming on the film, written by Knight and directed by Tom Harper (who directed three episodes of the series), recently wrapped. Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Tommy Shelby, supported by a cast that includes Stephen Graham, Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan and Tim Roth. The premiere date has not yet been confirmed.
The film is set during the Second World War.
“I’m genuinely excited that this movie is coming to fruition. It’s going to be an explosive chapter in the story of the Birmingham gang. No holds barred. Full throttle – Birmingham gang at war,” said Knight. I’m thrilled that the cameras have started rolling on this new chapter of the story, set during World War II. The country is at war, so of course the members of the Birmingham gang are,” Knight said.
After filming ended, he hinted at the possibility of a series about a “new generation” of characters.
Now he has confirmed that the film will not be the last we see of this gangster franchise. When asked by a Times Radio reporter what the future holds for the Birmingham Gang, Knight replied: “Well, it’s interesting that you ask that question, because the movie is coming, but it won’t be the end.”
Asked further about the new TV series, he said: “It won’t be the end, so I’ll say that. I’m not saying there won’t be anything more.”
The director also confirmed that the film will be released “in about a year.”
Actor Vinnie Jones recently stated that he would have liked to have been a part of this crime drama.
The sixth and final season of the series “Birmingham gang” was broadcast in 2022.
