The Hermitage has announced that the restoration of the Stock Exchange building on the Spit of Vasilievsky Island has reached its final stage. This was announced by the museum’s general director Mikhail Piotrovsky at the traditional Hermitage celebration of the White Nights.
The work has been going on for the last 10 years. The restoration has been delayed due to unscrupulous contractors.
Since 2014, builders have strengthened the building’s foundation, carried out waterproofing, restored the facades, granite stairs and sculptural groups, and repaired the roof.
It is noted that the Ministry of Culture is responsible for carrying out large-scale repair and restoration work, and the Hermitage is creating new exhibitions. It is planned to open exhibitions dedicated to the history of the Russian guard of the 17th-21st centuries, Russian and world heraldry and awards in the restored premises of the Exchange.
Following the restoration, the Hall of Russian Glory will become a venue for ceremonial all-Russian and city ceremonies, according to a statement from the Hermitage press service.
The architectural ensemble on the spit of Vasilievsky Island was built in 1805–1810 according to the design of Thomas de Thomon. At the time of its transfer to the Hermitage in 2014, the building was in a pre-emergency condition.
