During the fall of 2024, Customs has investigated a serious drug crime in which a person brought about a kilo of cocaine inside his body to Finland. The value of the confiscated cocaine batch in the street trade would have been up to around 150,000 euros.
The attempt to import narcotics was revealed during a customs inspection in September 2024 at Helsinki-Vantaa airport. The inspection revealed that a middle-aged man with a foreign background had swallowed 100 cocaine capsules weighing around 10 grams. Customs seized a total of 998 grams of cocaine from the person.
Director of investigations Kimmo Jauhiainen emphasizes that importing narcotics inside the body is always very risky and may even cause death in the worst case scenario.
– All the cocaine capsules were safely removed from the person’s body, but despite this, he suffered serious complications that required a long hospital stay, says Jauhiainen.
Drug seizures made by customs have increased significantly during 2024. Between January and September of this year, Customs has confiscated approximately 44 kilograms of cocaine, which is three times the amount compared to last year.
The case has been investigated as a serious drug crime. The preliminary investigation is being completed and the case will be transferred to the Southern Finland Prosecutor’s Office in the coming days for consideration of charges.
