To the north of Trikala Corinthia, the fire that broke out at noon on Sunday, September 29, in a forest area in Rozena Xylokastro, and in which two people lost their lives, is moving. Earlier, the air forces were reinforced in order to stop its course.

As it became known from the Fire Department, the forces are dealing with scattered outbreaks throughout the perimeter of the fire, mainly towards Eurostina. Ground forces remain strong amid fears of flare-ups. In particular, 406 firefighters, with 16 forest commando teams and 123 vehicles, volunteers and Civil Protection volunteer teams, as well as water tankers and project machinery of the Peloponnese Region and the General Staff of National Defense, as well as forces of the Forestry Service and the Hellenic Police, are operating in the field. 21 aerial vehicles are assisting from the air, specifically 8 aircraft and 13 helicopters.

Shortly after 8:00 in the morning, vehicle traffic was restored on the Corinth-Patra highway, from the height of Lykoporia to Derveni, which had been closed since late Monday night, due to the fire. Now, all vehicles move normally in both traffic streams.

It is noted that the Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vassilis Kikilias, went to Rosena Corinthia and the field of the fire on Monday. Mr. Kikilias held a coordination meeting at the “Olympus” Mobile Operations Center with the participation of representatives of the fire department, security forces, armed forces, local authorities and all the involved bodies.

It is recalled that two people were found dead, as announced on Monday by the Police. The preliminary investigation is being carried out by the Fire Department, while according to information the two bodies were found outside the village of Elliniko, near the camp of Happy Fighters. The process for their identification has not been completed and is ongoing to determine if they belong to the two men, 35 and 40 years old, who are the only ones missing since late Sunday night in the wider area of ​​Ano Pitso, Corinthia.

The EU has mobilized aid for the fires in Greece

At the same time, the EU is sending planes to help fight fires, especially in the Northern Peloponnese region.

Following Greece’s activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism on Monday evening, the EU Emergency Response Coordination Center immediately mobilized three firefighting aircraft from the rescEU mechanism. The aircraft, mobilized by Croatia and Italy, have already arrived in Greece.

The EU has also launched emergency satellite mapping through the Copernicus system to provide maps to local authorities. The European Commission continues to monitor the fire risk forecast and is ready to mobilize more help if needed, he said.

The Commission notes that during the summer season of forest fires, Greece had requested assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism twice, receiving then five firefighting planes, two helicopters, as well as seven ground teams, 348 firefighters and 115 vehicles. Greece also hosted a pre-deployment program in which firefighters and vehicles were deployed to Greece for several weeks.
