The process began with the hearing of Defense Secretary-designate Pete Hegseth at a meeting of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
The ex-soldier, who previously also served in Afghanistan, and the former leader of NGOs dealing with helping veterans, was questioned by the senators for about 4 hours.
At Pete Hegseth’s hearing, sharp and personal debates between candidate Donald Trump and Democratic politicians took place several times.
Several of the Democratic senators questioned the candidate’s suitability, citing, among other things, that he had no political experience and that he had been accused of sexual harassment. He was asked about his views on the necessary participation of women in the military and the military service of LGBTQ people.
According to Pete Hegseth, there has been a smear campaign against him on the political left and in the left-wing media.
He described his plans as wanting to bring back the “warrior spirit” to the American army. He emphasized that the conditions for military fitness should be established uniformly for everyone, and drew attention to the fact that defense spending in the United States has fallen below 3 percent of GDP. He said it was his job to implement Donald Trump’s presidential goal, the “peace through strength” policy.
The hearing was interrupted several times by activists sitting in the audience, who were immediately escorted out by the guards.
Speaking alongside Pete Hegseth was Mike Waltz, who was nominated by Donald Trump to be the National Security Advisor of the White House, regarding whom he said that he was able to return the army to the path of its original mission, to raise the low military morale, and to revive the view of progress based on merit.
He conveyed a clear vision of the Pentagon’s new day, when the Department of Defense leaves behind the weakness of the woke and focuses on deterrence through force. And when Democrats tried to use attacks from anonymous sources to undermine Pete, he handled them with dignity. It was a really fantastic audition for him and he leaves no doubt that he will be confirmed easily
he told the American television network Fox News Ned Ryunfounder of the conservative organization American Majority.
This hearing made two things abundantly clear: 1. The Left remains fully committed to the disastrous, woke, weak, and failed policies they (Americans) flatly rejected in November. This is actually sad. 2. Pete Hegseth will make a fantastic Secretary of Defense. This is how it should be done
one of Trump’s former ministers, Ben Carson, wrote on X.
The Senate’s special committee can vote on the suitability of Donald Trump’s defense minister nominee on January 20, the day of the presidential inauguration, and if a majority is formed there, he can be confirmed in his position at the Senate meeting on the same day.
A similar process will be required for most members of the administration to take office. The hearings will continue on Wednesday.
