Nikola Nikodijević, president of the Belgrade City Assembly, told Tanjug yesterday that the first metro line will be put into operation at the end of 2028 or the beginning of 2029. He added that tunnel digging machines, popularly called “moles”, will enter the ground in 2025.

Nikodijević reminded that work on the Makiško polje depot has already startedpointing out that it is the most demanding part of the project because the depot will be the center of management of the entire metro system.

According to him, the metro is not the only solution to traffic problems in Belgrade. Intensive work is also being done on the expansion of the “BG train”, which will connect the peripheral municipalities of Belgrade with the metro, enabling faster and more efficient movement, Beoinfo reported.

Construction is planned new line Zemun polje-Surčin which will connect the Belgrade airport. As he stated, this project must be completed by 2027, due to the international exhibition Expo 2027, and it is necessary to devise a way to transport a large number of people to the Expo complex and back.

The President of the City Assembly emphasized the importance of finishing the summer projects, including the reconstruction of certain streets and the replacement of installations, so that Belgrade would be ready for September 1. Also, due to high summer temperatures, works on construction sites start earlier in order for workers to rest in the hottest part of the day and avoid excessive effort.

According to him, the consumption of electricity in Belgrade during the summer is higher than in the winter due to the intensive use of air conditioners. Climate change is evident, so Nikodijević notes that it is Belgrade’s adaptation strategy to climate change adopted in 2015.

It contains a number of measures that the city will have to implement in the future. Recommendations from that strategy will be applied in the future construction of settlements and streetsbut adjusting the existing structures will take years, believes Nikodijević.
