PSD leader and Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu, gave an important statement to Digi24, regarding the announcement of Crin Antonescu who suspended his candidacy for the 2025 presidential elections. The Prime Minister confirmed that he will discuss this decision with the former liberal leader this week future
“I did not speak with Mr. Antonescu. More than likely I will speak on January 8, when we have a coalition and we will see what needs to be done. It’s important to focus on Romania’s pro-European path”, said Marcel Ciolacu, according to Digi24.
Crin Antonescu, the reasons for the suspension of candidacy
Crin Antonescu, liberal politician and former president of the PNL, announced that he is temporarily suspending the agreement regarding his candidacy for the presidential elections from the Coalition. Its decision is based on several factors:
1. Lack of an official date for the elections: “No election date has been set yet,” Antonescu said.
2. Lack of a unanimous vote: The Liberal mentioned that there is no consensus among Coalition members to support his candidacy. “I declare this agreement suspended and, consequently, my candidacy as well,” the politician said on Saturday evening, on Digi24.
Antonescu mentioned that the decision does not represent a definitive withdrawal: “I did not hesitate, I do not back down, I am willing, but I think we must be men of honor and serious people.”
What’s next for the Coalition?
The suspension of Crin Antonescu’s candidacy also brought a lot of uncertainty, but also the lack of a plan regarding the Coalition’s strategy for the 2025 presidential elections.
Marcel Ciolacu and the other political leaders will have to determine the next steps, considering the impact of this decision on the political plans. Ciolacu’s statement about the importance of Romania’s pro-European path suggests that the government’s political priorities will remain aligned with European objectives, regardless of the situation of Antonescu’s candidacy.
