Ayrshire (Great Britain) – The unexpected leader of the first round of the golf British Open is Daniel Brown. The 29-year-old Englishman shot 65 in his major debut in Ayrshire, Scotland, and is one shot ahead of Ireland’s Shane Lowry.
American Justin Thomas is third with 68 shots, his compatriot Xander Schauffele is in fourth place with 69 shots. Another American and world number one American Scottie Scheffler finished tied for eleventh place in the opening round with 70 shots.
The other favorites did not fare too well in the strong wind. Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy shot 78 to rank 129th, while two-time US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau shot 76 to rank 96th.
Forty-eight-year-old Tiger Woods fared even worse. The fifteen-time major winner and three-time British Open champion, who has struggled with health in recent years, had his worst first round at a major since 2015 and is tied for 138th at 79.
