The first WHO-approved monkeypox vaccine

The World Health Organization announced that it has approved Bavarian Nordic’s ( BAVA.CO ) monkeypox vaccine. It is the first mpox vaccine approved by the agency. It will be used to limit the spread of the disease in badly affected African countries.

The approval, known as prequalification, paves the way for developing countries, many of which lack the technology and resources to make rigorous checks on the safety and effectiveness of vaccines, to access the drug, according to Reuters.

WHO approval means that a drug is safe and effective. UN agencies also await WHO approval before purchasing medical products.

Monkey pox is a viral infection that spreads through close contact. It is usually mild but can kill if left untreated. Most cases were recorded in Congo from where it spread to other African countries. A first population vaccination campaign should begin in October in Congo.
