The sad news of the death of the 31-year-old footballer, who was found dead in the swimming pool of his home in Glyfada, immediately caused reactions abroad, especially in Britain, where he had written off his important football career.

Sky Sports reported: “George Baldock, former Sheffield United defender, has died at the age of 31”, while The Sun newspaper emphasized: “Tragic end for a star! There has been shock at the death of former Premier League player George Baldock, who was found dead in a swimming pool in Greece, just five months after leaving England.”

The news that dominated the international media concerns the death of a former Premier League footballer, aged just 31. The Daily Star carried the news under the headline: “Rest in peace, ‘blades’ legend.” According to the report, the athlete was found dead in a swimming pool, while he had recently transferred to Panathinaikos, after leaving Sheffield United.

Accordingly, the Daily Mail wrote: “Shock at Panathinaikos: Defender Baldock found dead”, highlighting the sudden and tragic event that shocked the team and the football world.

A little later, most of the clubs he played with in his many years of career in the English fields followed.

From Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City, to Stoke City and Swansea, teams from all divisions have sent their condolences for the loss of the Panathinaikos footballer.

“What awful news! The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool are with George’s family and friends,” wrote Liverpool, while Chelsea’s message was similar: “What tragic news. The thoughts of everyone at Chelsea are with George’s loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. Rest in peace, George.”

“Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened by the news of the death of its former player, George Baldock.

The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was hugely popular with fans, staff and team-mates who pulled on the red and white shirt alongside him.

The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United go out to George’s family and friends,” the Blades, the club the 31-year-old was most associated with, said in their post.

For its part, Northampton, to which he had been on loan at the height of his career, said: “It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the death of George Baldock, who had played on loan for our team at the age of 31. George made 5 appearances in 2011 on loan from MK Dons before spells at Oxford and Sheffield United.

“We are devastated to learn that George Baldock has passed away. A great player for us and others. Our thoughts are with James, Sam and all his family at this difficult time. RIP George.’, was the message from the Oxford fans.

The tragic news, however, made a sensation in other countries as well, with the Spanish AS reporting in its online edition that “Panathenaikos player George Baldock was found dead”.

The headline of Marca was similar, adding that the causes of his death remain unknown.”

While in Gazzetta Dello Sport the news reported: “Shock at Panathinaikos: Defender Baldock was found dead. The 31-year-old was found lifeless in the pool of his villa in Glyfada.”

Finally, one of the first to express their condolences was Harry Maguire. The England international who was born in Sheffield and was a footballer for the local United did not coexist with Baldock in the “blades” (he left in 2014 for Hull), however he never lost contact with the team.
