Axel Pons is probably most recognizable for his performances in the Moto2 championship, and the Spaniard recently appeared in a location where few expected him.
Pons — who competed in the grand prix championship for 10 seasons, from 2008 to 2017, with a best finish of sixth at the 2016 Italian Grand Prix — appeared in Pakistan.
In a video from a YouTube channel promoting tourism in Pakistan, Pons is seen walking down the road and telling the people filming him that he has been walking barefoot for six years.
In another video, when asked what his name is, he answers “Isa” and then explains that his birth name was Aksel.
“My story is very long, but I can tell you that since I started walking three years ago, I decided to unburden myself and just take my backpack and walk”he said to the child.
“About 15 months ago, when I felt ready, I decided to head east, towards the sun. I did this last year, and it was beautiful.”
Asked where he was from, Pons replied: “I am from Allah. But I was born in Barcelona, Spain.”
Pons said the transition from racing motorcycles to his new life was made when he began to question the point of his previous lifestyle.
“At some point I began to wonder what the point of living such a fast life was”he said.
“I started going slower, slower, slower, until now I’m walking slowly, slowly, appreciating the details of life.”
Explaining his journey on foot from Spain to Asia, Pons said: “It’s nothing special, it came naturally. At some point, nothing else made more sense than to walk and give up all the weight we’ve accumulated throughout our lives, and just want complete oneness with Allah, or with God.”
“This is my way of exercising, by walking.”
