They claimed their fifth triumph in the series and their seventeenth overall. The key figure in the duel was 36-year-old veteran Stephen Curry, who scored 24 points when he converted four three-pointers in the final.
The duel was a repeat of the final three years ago from Tokyo, but this time the Americans did not miss one of the NBA’s biggest stars.
Kevin Durant won his fourth gold from five rings and became the leader of the most successful American basketball players in Olympic history.
The best scorer in NBA history LeBron James added a third gold to his collection, he also has a bronze from Athens. Curry won his first ever Olympic medal, he had only two world championship titles to his credit.
The match had an even course until the middle of the second quarter, when the French led 27:26, but the Americans managed to build a ten-point lead before the break.
In the third ten-minute period, the defending champions led by 14, but the home team slowly began to reduce the deficit and reduced the difference to a single basket three minutes before the end (79:82).
But that’s when Curry scored the first of his four three-pointers in the final three minutes. In total, the longtime leader of Golden State converted 8 of 12 attempts from beyond the arc. Tokyo Finals leading scorer Durant added 15 points, as did Devin Booker.
NBA rookie of the year and 2023 draft pick Victor Wembanyama scored the most for France, but even his 26 points were not enough.
The Americans had 100% 8/8 sixes, while the French converted 10 of 17. The winners also outshot the opponent from beyond the arc 18:9.
