The Dutch e-bike maker Huyser was declared bankrupt last month, but it is still unclear whether the company behind the electric bicycles can make a new start.
Huijser en Smit BV, the South Holland company behind the e-bike brand Huyser, filed for bankruptcy in November. Several parties subsequently showed interest in a possible restart of the brand, which was known for its self-designed electric bicycles. According to curator Amos Kroll, ‘various discussions and negotiations’ are still taking place with possible takeover candidates. “It is expected that there will be more clarity about this in the short term.”
To VanMoof and Stella
The question remains whether Huyser, like VanMoof, QWIC and Stella, can make a fresh start after the bankruptcy. The curator will have an initial bankruptcy report this week published. According to Kroll, the main cause of the bankruptcy was that the company had made an incorrect assessment of the demand for e-bikes. Huyser made agreements about deliveries in 2021 and 2022, but by the autumn of 2023 was already left with a large stock of unsold bicycles.
According to Kroll, this was because ‘the market was completely saturated’. “Other well-known e-bike brands have also had to deal with this in the past year and, partly for that reason, found themselves in financial difficulties.” This month, for example, the Dutch e-bike brand Amslod also went bankrupt.
Problems with supplier
Huijser & Smit’s business activities have been suspended until there is more clarity about a possible restart. There are more than 4 million in debts, including around 2.3 million with Rabobank.
The company from Moordrecht, South Holland, also suffered from problems between a Chinese parts supplier and the Slovak assembly company. “A contract with a Chinese supplier, which unfortunately could not be fulfilled, has partly put us in this very difficult position,” Huyser wrote earlier.
Self-designed e-bikes with Dutch design
Huyser started in 2017 and the brand’s self-designed e-bikes were sold by more than 200 bicycle shops. The company marketed the bicycles as ‘Dutch design’ and focused mainly on electric city bicycles, although it also had a cargo bicycle in its range.
