The Game Awards 2024, here are the GOTY candidates: there is also Shadow of the Erdtree

Also in 2024 we will witness a ceremony of The Game Awardsthe awards dedicated to best video games of the year. The event produced and presented by Geoff Keighley will entertain viewers with an evening full of new announcements and special guests and with awards ceremonies for the titles that stood out the most during the year. So, just under a month after the new edition, the TGA have revealed the complete list of nomination.

It’s already there some twistsjudging by the names appearing in the list of the most coveted prize, that of Game of the Year (GOTY)the Game of the Year.

TGA: There is already controversy for the GOTY 2024 candidates

On X (formerly Twitter), Geoff Keighley presented the Game of the Year award candidates for The Game Awards 2024. The list is as follows:

• ASTRO BOT (Team Asobi/SIE)
• Balatro (LocalThunk/Playstack)
• Black Myth: Wukong (Game Science)
• Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree (FromSoftware/Bandai Namco)
• Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Square Enix)
• Metaphor: ReFantasia (Studio Zero/Atlus/Sega)

Keighley’s tweet received quite a few criticisms on the part of the community, either due to the absence of multi-acclaimed titles – Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, TLOZ: Echoes of Wisdom and Silent Hill 2 Remake, among others – or due to the choice of candidates for the most coveted award of the year.

Many had lashed out against the TGA patron for the new rule, announced on November 16th, relative to DLC and remake. Starting from this edition, expansions and remakes of ‘old’ video games can be named in the various categories provided by The Game Awards. According to the players, the announcement of this rule seemed to herald the nomination of Shadow of the ErdtreeElden Ring add-on – winner, we remember, of the GOTY 2022.

So it was, in fact. Among the candidates for the Game of the Year 2024 title is the great expansion of FromSoftware’s action RPG, as well as Final Fantasy VII Rebirthconsidered a remake and, therefore, eligible according to the new rule. However, there are other great titles, such as Metaphor: ReFantasia, ASTRO BOT, Black Myth: Wukong and the surprising Balatro.

The ‘snubbed’ titles have found a place in the other categories of the 2024 TGAs. Silent Hill 2 e Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealthfor example, are both nominated for the Best Narrative award, alongside Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II. Stellar Bladeanother notable absentee, is aiming for the Best Action Game and Best Score and Music awards. Four nominations, however, for Helldivers 2 e Call of Duty: Black Ops 6two other very important releases of this gaming year.

As he pointed out IGNit is ASTRO BOT and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth that take home the highest number of nominations, seven each; follows Metaphor: ReFantazio with six nominations.

We remember that the 2023 edition of The Game Awards saw triumph Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian Studios’ multi-acclaimed RPG won over big-name titles, including The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Alan Wake 2 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
