Based on the request received by the German budget committee, the Bundeswehr plans to spend a total of 825 million euros on new uniforms, wrote the Young freedom. According to the contract, the armed forces are entitled to 306 million euros, but the Federal Ministry of Defense would need an additional 519 million euros. According to the ministry, the budget committee must approve this money at its next meeting.
The Bundeswehr currently has less than 200,000 soldiers. If approved, the new uniforms would cost around €4,000 per soldier.
Christian Democratic Union (CDU) budget politician Ingo Gädechens accused the federal government of “absurd priorities”. According to him, the uniform “would not make the German army more capable of combat”. Instead, however, according to him, the “incredibly large amount” raises many questions.
The Bundeswehr has financial problems
The Bundeswehr is chronically underfunded. In early November, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) asked the coalition government to agree on the funding of the army’s military capability. The defense minister said at the time that he would need 58 billion euros in 2025.
“As things stand, we have received about 52 billion. This means that next year we will have to manage with almost six billion euros less,” Pistorius told dpa.
The planned new dress uniform a uniform worn primarily at funerals and other public occasions. The new design cannot fundamentally differ from the old one. There will be adjustments to fit and material to improve comfort.
