It must have been a terrifying sight as the German submarine crept into the houses of the first peaceful German town on its way. All this did not happen in some movie, but happened and is happening in Germany these days. The U17 S196 submarine of the German Navy has to be transported from Speyer to Sinsheim, the city’s technical museum, by road.
So far, the operation is a success, but more than likely, some people will break a sweat while completing the project. The journey of the special cargo began on June 30th, when it was loaded onto a 30-axle deep-cradle trailer in Speyer, to be taken to the river port of Mannenheim. There they put the huge monster on a ship, but not just any way: it had to be turned on its side to fit under the bridges on the Rhine.
Last Saturday, July 13, the barge carrying the submarine reached the river port in Hassmersheim. This is where the most interesting part of the oversized transport began, because from here they still have to travel about 30 kilometers by road to the to Sinsheim Technical Museum. The route leads to the institution through small towns and roundabouts.
According to the photos uploaded to the Internet by the transport company, Kübler Spedition, the 50-meter-long and 350-ton (!) monster passed the house walls by a few centimeters in some places. Turning in Y is therefore quite volatile with it. You have to know the route and be prepared for everything. Even if an ant is about to cross in front of the train transporting the monster, because every millimeter counts.
The trailer is pulled by a MAN TGX 8×4 tractor with a 680 hp engine. And behind it, two Mercedes-Benz Actros with 600 hp engines each provide the necessary “thrust”. The work is made more difficult by the fact that wherever they go with the train, a line of onlookers accompanies the maneuvering. Moreover, although it was originally placed on the trailer in a vertical position, its position had to be adjusted in some places, because it only fit if it was tilted slightly. The delivery of the submarine can be tracked by anyone. According to live images, it is now in a vertical position. In principle, it will take at least another week to reach its final destination.
The German Kübler Spedition is already quite experienced in the transport of such monsters, as they previously handled the transport to the maintenance facility in Speyer, and the road transport of ships is not far from their profile. Moreover, there was already an example of a piece of the A 380 passenger transport being taken on public roads. If there’s anyone out there who can do that, it’s them. At the same time, of course, the authorities are also needed to transport the monster, because the roads in front of it must be closed in order to ensure safe traffic.
