As part of a more extensive update, Google is trying to make the Play Store more transparent, which means interface changes and new elements in practice. The immediately striking change is the Collections widget added to the home screen, which brings together content recommended within already downloaded apps by category.
Depending on preference, the widget can be set to a full-screen view, or to a single-line bar, or to any size, depending on what content the user is interested in. Watch, i.e. a collection tailored to videos, shows recommendations from, for example, YouTube or other streaming services, Listen, i.e. a subcategory that helps the consumption of audio content, works on a similar principle, where the interface compresses podcasts and music apps.
It would be surprising if the update did not include some kind of artificial intelligence-related development, which in this case comes in the form of AI-generated evaluations that were previously announced at the Google I/O developer conference. The generated summaries essentially help in comparing apps belonging to a similar type and category, they provide quickly consumable information about what main functions a given software offers, how many times it has been downloaded and what you should know about it.
The filters are also becoming more sophisticated, in the case of games, it is now possible to search for specific genres, so the Internet user gets a clearer list if he wants to find an action game or a puzzle game.
The company has also announced another important change in the past few days: the guidelines for developers will become stricter, and apps that do not comply with the regulations and have already been uploaded will be deleted. However, Google puts it quite broadly: apps “must be stable and provide an attractive user experience”.
The new rules will be valid from August 31, from then on, software found to be incomplete or problematic can expect to be banned. The move is likely to affect applications that only display web pages or are webview-based. It is not yet known what exactly the process of this will be, whether the developers can count on advance notice, or whether they will be given a grace period to modify the objectionable features.
