According to the representatives of the ministry, this step is essential for updating the existing framework, represented by the Extradition Treaty between Romania and Great Britain, concluded in Bucharest on March 9, 1893, which Canada still applies today, as part of the Commonwealth.

“The treaty ratified 131 years ago no longer meets the requirements of effective cooperation, being very old and applicable only to an exhaustive list of crimes for which extradition can be requested. According to the regulations in force, the duration of examination of the requests made by the Romanian authorities is between 3 and 5 years, however, there are also cases resolved after 8-9 years”, the ministry says.

According to him, considering the current international context and the challenges of transnational crime, such as terrorism, human trafficking, drug trafficking, arms trafficking, money laundering and corruption, the signing of the new extradition treaty is necessary to maximize and focus efforts in the fight against organized crime.

The Romanian delegation to the negotiations will include representatives of the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
