“The government doesn’t decide what the opposition does”

L’differentiated autonomy continues to divide politics and public opinion. The Minister for Regional Affairs, Roberto Calderolirelaunched the debate by defining the criticisms leveled at the provision as unfounded. His statements sparked heated reactions, in particular from the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schleinand the opposition, who accuse the government of wanting to stifle dissent.

Calderoli on differentiated autonomy

During a meeting on differentiated autonomy in Brescia, Roberto Calderoli he vigorously defended the bill, despite the findings of the Constitutional Court. The minister underlined that only 7 of the 100 exceptions presented were accepted, stating that the general structure of the law remains “solid”.

“Once I pour those requests into the law, the opposition will be silent and I hope they will be silent forever,” declared Calderoli, raising a wave of controversy.

He then reiterated that differentiated autonomy is fully in line with the Constitution and cited past episodes, such as the referendum on changes to the Fornero lawto support the legitimacy of the measure.

Schlein’s response

Elly Schleinsecretary of the Democratic Party, responded harshly to Calderoli’s words. “His statements prove one little respect for democracy“he declared. Again, differentiated autonomy has once again been defined as a “Split Italy” which undermines the unity of the country.

Schlein accused the government of ignoring constructive criticism from constitutionalists and the opposition, reiterating that noIt’s not up to the majority to decide the role of the opposition.

He also promised to continue fighting against cuts to healthcare, schools and public transport, stating that the opposition will continue to make its voice heard in defense of citizens.

The opposition intervenes

Other opposition figures also criticized Calderoli. Michele Gubitosavice-president of the 5 Star Movement, joked about his statements: “When differentiated autonomy is a bad memory, we will wrap him in the tricolor in silence, as he likes”.

Luana ZanellaAVS group leader, defined differentiated autonomy as “Calderoli’s second piece of bullshit after the electoral law”, underlining the political chaos generated by the project.

The opposition points out that the bill risks accentuate territorial inequalitiesan issue that will continue to divide the country.
