The government of Argentina called on Messi to apologize for the racist chanting

Argentina’s government officials have called on captain Lionel Messi and the president of the country’s Football Association, Claudio Tapia, to apologize for a video showing Argentina’s soccer players chanting racist chants about French soccer players of African descent after winning the Copa America final.

The video released by midfielder Enzo Fernandez does not show whether Messi is participating in the chant, but Undersecretary for Sports Julio Garo believes he should also issue an apology.

“The captain of the national team must apologize for this case. The same goes for the president of the federation. I think it is appropriate. (The incident) leaves our country in a bad position despite good successes,” Garo assessed.

FIFA said earlier it was investigating the case after the French Football Federation lodged a complaint, and Chelsea Football Club said it had launched disciplinary proceedings against its player Enzo Fernandez, who posted the video.

Fernandez issued a public apology for the video, which was created during the celebration of Argentine football players after the final of the Copa America in which they defeated Colombia.
