Interim Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus announced today that his government will seek the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India, where she is in exile after fleeing a mass civil uprising in August.
In a televised address to mark 100 days of his government, Yunus said the interim government would try those responsible, including Hasina, for the hundreds of deaths during the student-led uprising that ended her 15-year rule.
He said that not only the deaths of everyone during the uprising, but also all other human rights violations, including the disappearances of people while Hasina was in power, will be investigated. Bangladesh has requested Interpol’s help in issuing a red warrant to arrest Hasina and her associates.
“We will seek the return of the fallen autocrat Sheikh Hasina from India,” Yunus said. “I have already discussed the matter with the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan,” he added.
Yunus also said that the most important task of his government is to hold new elections so that the country gets a democratically elected government, but he did not give any time frame for that. He said that his administration will first implement reforms in various sectors, including the electoral system.
He promised that, when the electoral reforms are completed, the date of new elections will be announced.
In his address, Yunus described attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus, as “exaggerated”, many of whom complained that hard-line Islamists were gaining more influence in the country after Hasina’s ouster.
