The head of the Central Bank of Ireland: Europe remains the best place to live

The head of Ireland’s central bank has warned against focusing only on Europe’s problems, saying it is still the best place in the world to live, writes Bloomberg.

“I can’t think of a better place for my family to live – and I’ve traveled all over the world,” Gabriel Makhlouf told bankers and journalists at an event in Washington on Saturday.

Before taking over the leadership of the Irish central bank in 2019, he was the most senior Treasury official in New Zealand. Before that, he was a British civil servant and advisor to former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Born in Egypt, he holds British and Greek passports.

“One incredibly strong thing we have in Europe is the spirit of unity and the recognition that connections matter – and we spend a lot of time agonizing over all sorts of things,” he said. “But actually, in my view, the agony is about the potential that we can still achieve, as opposed to – is there some problem that we can’t solve.”

Europe’s economy is struggling in a slow growth phase at the moment, with consumers reluctant to spend despite falling inflation, rising wages and a strong labor market. Also, businesses are not very eager to invest against the background of increased uncertainty and geopolitical risks.
