The director of the World Health Organization said on Friday he was not sure he would survive an airstrike carried out by Israel a day earlier, during a series of attacks on the Iran-aligned Houthi movement, Reuters reports.

Speaking after the ordeal he went through at the Sanaa International Airport on Thursday, the Director General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that the explosions that shook the building were so deafening that his ears are still ringing after more than a day.

Tedros said it quickly became apparent that the airport had been attacked, describing people “running in disarray” around the site after about four explosions, one of which was “alarmingly” close to where he was sitting near the departure hall.

“I wasn’t sure I could actually survive because it was so close, a few meters from where we were,” he told Reuters. “A slight deviation could have resulted in a direct hit.”

Tedros said he and his colleagues were stuck at the airport for the next hour as what he believed to be drones flew overhead, fueling concerns that they could open fire again. Among the debris, he and his colleagues saw fragments of rockets, he said.

“There was no shelter. There was nothing. So you’re exposed, waiting for something to happen,” he said.

The Israeli attacks on Yemen came after the Houthis repeatedly launched drones and missiles at Israel in what they described as acts of solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.
