The heating season is starting – is everything ready?

The heating season has officially started in Serbia, and on this occasion representatives of the Ministry of Mining and Energy talked with the most important energy entities about preparedness.

As stated, it was established that sufficient energy sources have been provided, that the overhauls in the heating plants have been successfully completed and that everything is ready for the delivery of thermal energy.

The representatives of “Elektroprivreda Srbije” presented data on the current situation and projections when it comes to the production of coal, electricity and operational readiness. It was pointed out that coal stocks and accumulations are at a high level, that overhauls are being completed according to plan and that EPS will ensure reliable energy production during the heating season.

Representatives of “Elektrodistribucija Srbije” pointed out that during this year the largest investments in the distribution system were realized, replacing 34,000 old poles with concrete ones, modernizing 2,400 kilometers of the network and installing more than half a million digital meters. As they say, this improved the security of electricity supply throughout the country, enabled faster troubleshooting and reduced interruptions in supply. They also emphasized that after more than a decade, there is a high occupancy of equipment in warehouses and that the felling of vegetation was completed on time.

The meeting also presented data on storage capacity occupancy, supply and distribution in the gas sector. It was indicated that special attention will be paid to the potential interruption of the supply of natural gas from the direction of Ukraine, in order to analyze the impact of this event on the transport gas system and consequently on the delivery of gas in the required quantities to heating plants in Serbia.

In addition, as they stated, additional quantities of gas supply from Azerbaijan during the coming winter have been agreed, and work is also being done to secure additional quantities from Russia. Also, everything is ensured for a safe supply, even if there is an increase in demand for gas due to potentially low temperatures.

From PUK City Heating Plant Niš, they confirmed that everything is ready for the heating season. According to Darko Pejčić, the technical director of this heating plant, he reminded that the City Heating Plant invested significant funds this year in the largest heat source, “Crooked Vir”, in order to improve energy efficiency and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

“We do not expect any significant problems, considering that during the summer we performed all the functional tests, we simulated the beginning of the heating season”, said Pejčić and added that, since the system was out of order for over five months, additional functional tests.
