Republican Mike Johnson is the (old) new speaker of the US House of Representatives. At first, he did not get enough votes, but after ten minutes of negotiations, two Republican congressmen changed their minds and gave him their vote. In total, Johnson collected the necessary 218 votes of support.
After all members of the House of Representatives had already cast their votes, they did Mike Johnson mustered only 215, as three Republicans voted for the other candidate. But until the official announcement of the end of the first round of voting, the deputies can still change their minds, which Johnson managed to convince two Republicans – Keitha Selfa in Ralph Norman. 52-year-old Johnson, who also enjoys the support of the newly elected US president Donald Trumpin a dramatic twist, was elected president already in the first round. Why is chocolate so appealing to us?
In the November elections, the Republicans won 220 seats, while the Democrats won 215. Already at today’s constituent session, this majority was reduced to 219 votes, since the Republican Matt Gaetz announced that he would not take the seat. Two more members are expected to fill positions in the incoming Trump administration, meaning the ratio will likely soon be 217 seats to 215.
Johnson has led the House of Representatives since October 2023, when his predecessor was removed Kevin McCarthy.
