A 60-year-old woman lost her life in a brutal knife attack at Ica Maxi in Botkyrka south of Stockholm on Tuesday evening.

The suspected perpetrator, a 26-year-old Indian immigrant, was quickly apprehended by the store’s security guard after the incident. The attack must have been unprovoked.

According to The Express the 26-year-old had just been in Södertälje to pick up his Swedish passport from the police before he attacked inside Ica Maxi.

The newspaper has also published surveillance images from the police showing the man in connection with the murder.

The man is said to have had mental problems for a long time and has been a Swedish citizen since 2009. He was born in India and has previously worked in park maintenance, according to Expressen.

Due to his citizenship, he cannot be deported from Sweden under current legislation.

The stabbing happened around 7.30pm last Tuesday. According to information from the police and witnesses, the man walked calmly around the store before he suddenly attacked the woman from behind. Surveillance images show how the man first stayed at the kitchen department where two employees worked before he committed his crime.

The police describe the incident as a so-called act of insanity with no known connection between the victim and the perpetrator.
