The Romanian government has approved the project to digitize identity cards. Which means that, once the implementation starts, Romanians will be able to identify themselves with their mobile phone.
The project to create electronic identity cards was approved in the last meeting by the Government.
This investment, of over 380 million lei, is financed by PNRR, from European funds.
The identity card, on the mobile phone
The government approved two digitization projects. One of the acts establishes the digitization of the electronic identity card, and the second one refers to the digitization of the notary system.
„Today, we approve two digitization projects with a major impact for citizens. The first refers to the digitization of the electronic identity card, an investment of over 380 million lei, financed by the PNRR“, declared the Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu.
The new electronic ID cards will be able to be stored on phones, allowing citizens to use them officially.
The digitization of passports and identity cards involves the creation of electronic versions of these documents.
These digital versions will contain the same information found on the chips of physical passports and ID cards.
They will also include a photo of the holder. However, they will not include fingerprints.
It should be noted that these electronic documents will be optional. Which means that digital documents will only be created on demand.
This also means that, once the new Ordinance comes into force, drivers will no longer be required to present the bulletin in physical format. But, just like in the case of RCA insurance, the identity card will be able to be presented on the mobile phone.
Digital driving license
At the level of the Union Europeans the introduction of a digital driver’s license was proposed. The document will be able to be saved on the mobile phone.
The validity of these documents is proposed to be 15 years, for those who drive motorcycles, cars or tractors. For truck and bus drivers, the proposal is to reduce the validity to 5 years.
Another, unofficial proposal, which was discussed in Romania, was the introduction of a vehicle registration card in electronic format. But, for now, no proposal to change the law in this regard has been initiated.
If ratified at European level, member states will have many years to transpose the directives into national legislation. But, for now, no decision has been made in this regard. However, it is possible that by 2030, the digital car license will be introduced throughout the European Union.
