SARAJEVO – The import of medicines in Bosnia and Herzegovina is constantly growing. The quantity and value of imported drugs is growing, as shown by the data of the Directorate for Indirect Surveillance of BIH. Thus, from 2019 to today, if we talk about the monetary value, the import of medicines increased by 300 million KM. Last year, this figure approached the dizzying figure of one billion KM.
Namely, in 2024, over 9,000 tons of medicines (9,179,871 kg) worth almost one billion KM (941,406,136 KM) were imported into Bosnia and Herzegovina. Only a year earlier, slightly fewer medicines were imported in quantity (9,049,178 kg), but the value was approximately 80 million KM less (860,372,531 KM).
The trend of growth in the amount of imported medicines has been noticeable in previous years as well as the monetary value of imported medicines.
So, for example, just five years ago, that is, in 2019, nearly 8,500 tons of medicines worth 632 million KM were imported into BiH.
This means that the value of imported medicines last year, compared to 2019, increased by 300 million KM.
The turnover of psycholeptics in Bosnia and Herzegovina weighs about 30 million KM
We also asked how much psycholeptics, or in jargon, tranquilizers, are consumed in Bosnia and Herzegovina. From the Agency for Medicines of BiH for CAPITAL they say that the data for last year have not yet been completed and that the reporting of traffic data by importers and domestic producers for the last quarter of 2024 is in progress.
Figures from 2023 show that over 30 million KM were consumed in BiH of this type of medicine, which includes popular tranquilizers.
„The pharmacotherapeutic group of psycholeptics includes antipsychotics, anxiolytics, sedatives and hypnotics. specify from the Agency.
To be precise, the total turnover of these medicines expressed in KM in 2023 was 30.6 million KM or 3.19 percent of the total turnover.
If we take into account the estimate that about 2.9 million inhabitants currently live in Bosnia and Herzegovina, this means that each inhabitant, even newborn babies, on average spent a little more than 12 KM on tranquilizers in 2023.
