If we were to go by the revelations of Mark Gurman, one of the most credible insiders when it comes to information related to Apple products, the Cupertino company is in a hurry to finalize and release iOS 18.2 in December of this year. Apple’s intention is to have as comprehensive an implementation as possible of the functions promised by Apple Intelligence on the new iPhone 16 series by the winter shopping season.
Currently, Apple has released no less than four Beta versions of iOS 18.1 to developers and testers. This update can be considered a minor one, however, adding a connectivity section with a changed design within the Control Center and suggestions for when you choose to write commands to the Siri assistant.
Update 18.2 will bring the first generative AI features
In comparison, iOS 18.2 promises to be a major update for Apple’s operating system, which will bring some of the essential functions promised by Apple Intelligence: Genmoji (the ability to generate emoticons with the help of AI), integration with ChatGPT and Image Playground (the ability to generate images with the help of AI in applications such as Messages, Notes, Keynote, Pages and others). Other features in development are AI-powered lock screen notification prioritization, as well as a new interface for the email app.
According to Mark Gurman, Apple would work to eliminate the bugs in this update until November, in order to be able to release it in December.
What the future holds for iOS updates
After the release of iOS 18.2, Apple will move on to the development of the iOS 18.3 and iOS 18.4 updates, along with the update of the Siri assistant. However, they will not be released until the end of this year.
According to Gurman, Apple aims to have the iOS 18.3 update completed by the end of 2024, with a scheduled release in January 2025. However, the most consistent update would be 18.4, which will include the new functions for the Siri assistant (some of these might also be available in 18.3). 18.4 would be completed in February 2025, with a release scheduled for March 2025.
It remains to be seen whether the European authorities and Apple will reach an agreement on the release of Apple Intelligence functionality to users in the European Union.
