The Joint Response Force activates a system to monitor Russia’s “shadow fleet”

The JEF is a coalition of ten like-minded countries – Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Latvia, Great Britain, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland and Sweden – which includes a high readiness force for rapid response to crises in the Far North and Northern Europe. The coalition was established in 2015 at the initiative of Great Britain.

The JEF issued a statement expressing concern over the damage to the EstLink 2 electricity cable connecting Estonia and Finland and underlining the alliance’s commitment to working together to protect common interests.

The operation, dubbed Nordic Warden, which was launched last week, uses artificial intelligence to assess data from a variety of sources, including automatic identification systems used by ships to broadcast their location, and calculate the risk posed by each incoming ship. in the area of interest.

The system registers specific vessels identified as part of Russia’s “shadow fleet” so that they can be closely monitored as they approach key areas of interest. If a potential risk is detected, the system will monitor the suspicious vessel in real time and issue an immediate warning that will be relayed to JEF countries as well as NATO allies.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa (JV) emphasized in her statement that, by strengthening security in the Baltic Sea, Latvia, together with other JEF countries under the leadership of Great Britain, will use a new artificial intelligence solution in the future to monitor Russia’s “shadow fleet” and thus strengthen the security of critical infrastructure.
