Cecilia Sala, who has been held in prisons in Iran since last month, is now in Rome.
Early on Wednesday, January 8, the journalist was released and left Tehran by plane, which landed later that day at Ciampino Airport.

In videos and photos published by the Italian press, Cecilia Sala can be seen running off the plane and embracing her partner, Daniele Raineri. She was also welcomed at the airport by her parents, as well as by the Prime Minister of the country, Georgia Meloni.

Meloni, in her statements on Rai public television, referred to the release and return of the journalist, who had been incarcerated in Tehran prisons since December 19.
“The release of Cecilia Sala was the result of a nice, team effort. It was a beautiful day, everyone won, our nation won,” Meloni stressed.

“I thank our security services, our diplomacy, all the state leaders and officials who in the previous days worked professionally and confidentially to achieve this specific goal,” added the Italian prime minister.
