Koenigsegg ditches the three-cylinder engine for the Gemera and says it will focus solely on the supercharged V8.
When Koenigsegg first announced the Gemera, the first four-seater in its history, it was equipped with a hybrid powertrain that combined a 2.0-liter three-cylinder engine. It was joined by three electric motors, for a total of 1,700 HP and 3,500 Nm.
The car was also to be offered with a 5.0-liter V8 engine, the same as the Jesko, developing 2,300 hp and 2,750 Nm. It should have been optional, and the base version should have received a 2.0-liter three-cylinder engine.
Conform Carscoops, the Swedish manufacturer’s plans have changed. Christian von Koenigsegg has revealed that this hybrid engine, known as the Tiny Friendly Giant (TFG), has been abandoned and will no longer be fitted to the Gemera.
The Koenigsegg Gemera will only be available with the 5.0 liter V8 engine
Koenigsegg said most Gemera customers switched to the V8 engine when given the choice. The manufacturer then convinced those who were undecided to choose the V8 engine.
While the three-cylinder model was almost 1,000bhp short of the twin-turbo V8, it was around 270kg lighter than the bigger engine. It was also to be the first vehicle equipped with Koenigsegg’s innovative Freevalve engine. Customers wanted a more powerful V8, and this new engine didn’t stand a chance.
Koenigsegg isn’t giving up on the concept entirely and says it’s still working on it, making it an interesting proposition. Christian von Koenigsegg also said that it could one day be used on the Gemera.
