Kumla has shut down all IT systems to find out the extent of the cyber attack that hit the municipality.
– Right now we work analog for 48 hours to be able to work undisturbed, says municipal manager Gunilla Mueller Prabin.

The hackers who were behind the cyber attack against Kumla municipality have gained access to “basically everything”, reports P4 Örebro.

– We see that they have been inside our entire environment, says Mueller Prabin to TT.

The municipality has received a demand for a ransom, but it is unclear what type of information the attackers have come across.

– We don’t know that, and besides, I wouldn’t say it either if I knew, given the sensitive situation we’re in.

Paper and pen

Kumla municipality is now working according to a crisis plan that has existed since before.

– We use paper and pencil in all our activities, says Gunilla Mueller Prabin.

She says that the attack has no concrete consequences for citizens of Kumla municipality. Among other things, there are already work routines for bank transactions in situations like this.

– Everything will be done manually instead. It gets a little more complicated for us, but we think our citizens should get what they need.

Growing problem

Cyber attacks against socially important operations are a growing problem. In 2023, a total of 334 IT incidents were reported from 136 different government organizations and authorities, according to a report from MSB. Cyber attacks were the most common incident cause.

In December 2023, the municipality of Härjedalen suffered a similar attack. Kalix municipality was also exposed to a cyber attack in December 2021, which caused problems for several months. In July of the same year, Coop was hit by an extensive so-called ransomware attack. At the end of November 2023, the Church of Sweden’s IT system was down for several weeks after an IT attack.
