The Labor Office will publish December unemployment, analysts expect it to increase

Prague – Today, the Labor Office will publish data on the December unemployment rate in the Czech Republic. Analysts assume that the share of the unemployed increased to 4.2 percent from November’s 3.9 percent, mainly due to seasonal effects. Unemployment will thus remain above the level of 2023, when it was 3.7 percent in December.

At the end of November, there were 290,425 people without work, 255,641 job vacancies. The number of unemployed people prevailed over the number of vacancies for the twelfth month in a row, and the difference widened even more against October.

“The last month of last year will probably bring a stronger increase in the share of the unemployed than we saw in previous months,” said Raiffeisenbank analysts, who expect unemployment to rise to 4.2 percent. “The increase in unemployment at the turn of the year is a typical seasonal phenomenon, so we don’t have to worry too much about the development of the labor market,” they added. However, according to them, the development will differ depending on the sector, when layoffs can be expected mainly in industry.

The share of the unemployed varies over the long term in individual regions. In November, unemployment was the highest in the Ústí Region at six percent, while the lowest unemployment was 2.8 percent in Prague. The greatest excess pressure on the labor market was in the Karvinska region with 11 applicants for one position. Mladoboleslavsk and the Central Bohemian districts of Praha-východ and Praha-západ had the least number of unemployed in relation to the offer of places, where there were exactly 0.3 applicants per place.
