The lack of irrigation water brings farmers to despair

The lack of irrigation water creates tense situations throughout the country, warn the representatives of the Forum of Professional Farmers and Processors from Romania (APPR Forum), requesting, at the same time, the authorities to complete the legislation regarding the irrigation objectives that have not been completed and for which takeover protocols cannot be concluded- teaching with the Organizations of Water Users for Irrigation (OUAI) in the respective areas.

“We return to one of the themes that our organization has repeatedly brought to the attention of the public and the authorities and which, in the climatic period we are going through (with temperatures that have constantly exceeded 40 degrees Celsius, after a total lack of precipitation of more than 60 days in many regions) becomes critical for farmers and for the entire population, leading to significant and irreversible crop losses. We refer to the rehabilitation of irrigation systems, such as re-pumping stations, and mention our requests for infrastructure investments
specifically, especially in those counties where, even in 2024, in the conditions where we are talking about extreme pedological drought for 5 years now, farmers do not have the possibility to water, although they have canals in the vicinity of their farm, because they are not functional”, it is stated in a press release of the APPR Forum.

The organization points out, as an example, the situation at the Spiru Haret pumping station, belonging to ANIF Brăila (the water supplier for the entire Ialomiţa-Călmătăui Terrace), where there are problems with increasing the pumping capacity, which leads to a drop in the levels in the canal network, implicitly to the partial cessation of irrigation on extensive areas in Ialomiţa and Brăila counties.

“Problems in water supply were also reported by members of the APPR Forum from other counties, especially in areas with acute water deficit, such as Vrancea, Buzau, Prahova. This creates major tensions, which can degenerate uncontrollably (…), the organization emphasizes in the statement.

In this context, the APPR Forum requests the adoption of a normative act to regulate the problem of uncompleted or unreceived irrigation objectives.

“We mention again our requests (for which we have submitted multiple addresses to various authorities) for the completion and amendment of the legislation to solve the problem of unfinished and/or unreceived irrigation objectives that are not in ANIF’s patrimony and for which takeover protocols cannot be concluded -teaching with the OUAIs in the respective area, although it could be rehabilitated by them. The problem would be solved relatively quickly, by adopting a normative act. The major deficiencies in the water supply even in areas set up for irrigation require, in our opinion, an energetic and immediate action from the authorities, to which we make a desperate appeal!”, the Forum of Professional Farmers and Processors from Romania also sent.
